“MEP Roberta Metsola has shown energy, competence and dedication” – Simon Busuttil.

 

This morning MEP Roberta Metsola submitted her nomination to stand for election and continue in her role as a Member of European Parliament for Malta. She later addressed a press conference, together with Leader of the Opposition Simon Busuttil, where she presented an annual report of her activities since she was elected in April last year.

 

“Roberta Metsola’s expertise and experience in EU affairs made it possible for her to hit the ground running when she was elected. Over the last year, Roberta showed her energy, competence and dedication on a number issues for the people of Malta & Gozo” stated Simon Busuttil. He emphasised that it was a special occasion for him since it was Roberta Metsola who was elected to fill his seat in the European Parliament.

 

Roberta Metsola stated that since her election she has joined four European Parliament committees dealing with Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs; Consumer Protection; Organised Crime and Petitions. She has made numerous speeches and dealt with topics like employment, fundamental rights, mobile-phone roaming charges, healthcare, SMEs, immigration, environmental affairs and citizenship. In less than a year, Dr Metsola submitted 65 parliamentary questions on issues such as protection of journalists’ sources, discrimination and women’s rights and was chosen to be the European Parliament’s rapporteur on four dossiers related to asylum and the Malta-based European Asylum Support Office. She has met with more than 75 NGOs and addressed 35 conferences in Malta and Gozo.

 

Dr Metsola said that she has kept in constant contact with the people that she represents and has always worked in their best interests.

 

Dr Busuttil underlined that even though there was a perception that Roberta Metsola had worked for years in the institution, in reality she achieved all this in just under one year.
