“Malta-based businesses can sell goods to more than 300 million people online.” – Roberta Metsola.
Member of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has welcomed the news that businesses based in Malta and Gozo can now sell their goods on Amazon’s websites, saying that “this is an issue that has long been affecting Maltese companies and SMEs in particular. Being able to trade on Amazon opens up Malta’s market to 300 million customers who use the platform”.
Dr Metsola, who forms part of the European Parliament’s Internal Market and Consumer Affairs Committee (IMCO) and who has been at the forefront of working to forward the interests of SMEs in Malta and Gozo, said “this is excellent news for Malta-based businesses, which have, until now, been suffering an unfair disadvantage due to having been given different treatment to companies in other countries. Maltese businesses have never shied away from competition, but that competition must be fair. Our businesses can compete with anyone, anywhere, but they need a level playing field.”
“I have made enquiries as an MEP for Malta and Gozo on this matter and I am pleased that the Malta Communications Authority (MCA) has managed to rectify the situation. As a result, Maltese businesses can now join a network of more than two million Amazon sellers and a market of over 300 million customers,” said Dr Metsola.
Malta was not included in the list of countries whose residents were allowed to list their products on Amazon’s websites, but the eCommerce platform has given formal confirmation to the MCA that Malta now forms part of the list of countries supported to sell on its websites.
